Warwick, R.I. – Today, Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) announced the winner of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition at an award ceremony honoring young artists from Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District.

“This year, my office received over 50 drawings, paintings, and photographs that explored the unique stories and cultural traditions of Rhode Islanders — and I'm completely blown away by the talent of the young people in our state.” said Representative Magaziner. “I want to congratulate Gwen Ruffolo for winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition, and thank each and every one of these young artists who shared their personal stories and artistic ability in this year’s competition.”

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of local artists select the winning entries. One winner from each district is recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning artwork is displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Overall Winner:  Ram Among Sheep by Gwen Ruffolo (North Kingstown High School)
