Washington, D.C. – On April 26, 2023, Representative Magaziner (RI-02) spoke on the House Floor to oppose Republicans’ extreme “Default on America” plan that will hurt Rhode Island seniors.

“Led by the most extreme elements of his conference, Speaker Kevin McCarthy has put forward a MAGA Republican ransom note: either we go along with the Republicans’ plan to hurt seniors, or they will blow up the entire U.S. economy,” said Rep. Magaziner.

House Republicans’ bill would:

Force the Social Security Administration to close offices and cut staff, causing longer wait times for 253,000 RI seniors and people with disabilities to process claims.

Cut off more than 1 million seniors’ access to food & nutrition services, like Meals on Wheels.

Put 100,000 seniors at risk of homelessness..

Block Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) from completing 38% of the required health and safety recertification surveys of nursing homes and home health agencies, putting seniors at greater risk of unsafe conditions.

Reduce funding for the Employment and Training Administration, causing 10,000seniors in the program to lose their jobs.

“We won’t stand for it. I’ll fight this ‘Default on America’ with everything I’ve got,” Rep. Magaziner stated.
