Why they give is a powerful and personal story:

Our journey with Women & Infants began in the summer of 2001. Jack and I were expecting our first child that fall. We lived in Washington, D.C., at the time and planned to deliver at a local hospital there. My pregnancy was considered “healthy and normal,” so, just as we did every year, we went to Cape Cod for the summer.

At the end of August, I woke up in the middle of the night. My due date was still eight weeks away, but I just knew something was wrong. I frantically called my OB-GYN in Washington, D.C. The doctor told me to go to a hospital on Cape Cod, get checked out, and drive home the following day. But Jack suspected we would need world-class medical care to save our baby. He looked at me and said, “We are going to Women & Infants.”

Little did we know, that would be a most fateful – and wonderful – decision.

We didn’t know it at the time, but I had begun to hemorrhage. After a day in the hospital, they told me I wasn’t going to make it back to D.C. to deliver our baby.  A few days later, I had a C-section and our son Adam was born. He went into the neonatal ICU, where he stayed for three weeks.

Today, Adam is a happy, healthy 21-year-old attending college. But Jack and I know the outcome could have been very different had it not been for our decision to go to Women & Infants Hospital.

I cannot say enough about the care I received while a patient at Women & Infants. The medical staff, especially the nurses, were incredible. From the moment we entered the ER, it was top-notch care. Everyone was so nurturing, calming, and professional. The doctors were knowledgeable and empathic. The nurses could not have been more supportive.

Jack feels the same way. And that’s why we have been and will continue to be Women & Infants Hospital’s most grateful patients. We want to give back to the hospital that took such great care of our family at such a critical time.

When Jack and I discovered that Women & Infants was embarking on a capital campaign to build a new labor and delivery center- one that would reflect the changes in standards of care over the last 35 years- we felt compelled to make it our top philanthropic priority.
