Women’s Lacrosse: Roger Williams Doubles Up Western New England in CCC Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team picked up their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Western New England, 20-10.

Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) and Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) each had a team-high five points, with Waryas recording three goals and two assists and Kelley scoring five goals, both players had four ground balls in the tilt. Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) had four points with three goals and an assist while Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) and Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) both chipped in three points.

Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) made six saves in the cage, while Cunningham, Brooke McErlain (Hampton, N.H.) and Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) each had a pair of caused turnovers.  McErlain had a team high eight ground balls in the matchup.

Waryas, kicked things off for the Hawks, scoring 40 seconds into the matchup, before assisting on Roger Williams second goal of the game 2:00 later. With the Hawks holding a 3-0 lead, the Golden Bears then scored three straight goals to level the contest at 3-3. Kelley and Cunningham then each scored a goal to give the Hawks a two-goal advantage before Hannah Jarvis scored one for Western New England.

Roger Williams then talled five straight goals to take a 10-4 lead with 13:46 remaining in the opening half. The Hawks went on to outscore the Golden Bears 15-6 in the opening half.

Roger Williams was outscored 3-1 in the third frame, but outscored the Golden Bears 4-1 in the fourth quarter.

Roger Williams (4-4, 1-0 CCC) will travel to take on Curry at Friday, Mar. 31 at 4 pm, up in Milton, Mass.  The Hawks will then take a break from CCC action to take on Colby on Sunday, Apr. 2 at 1 pm.
