Mayor Brett Smiley, Director of Public Works Patricia Coyne Fague and Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Director Clara Decerbo are warning residents to take precautions as the Providence-area expects snow accumulation and dangerously cold temperatures Monday night, through Tuesday.

“We are taking this storm seriously, pretreating our roads and preparing our staff to clear snow quickly and effectively throughout the night,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Our goal is to ensure safe roads and that there are minimal impacts to the morning commute. We want to remind residents to exercise caution, sign up for CodeRED alerts and to reach out to us at 3-1-1 should they need support for any nonemergency issue.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Rhode Island from 7PM Monday until 7PM on Tuesday. The Providence area is projected to receive 4-6 inches of snow accumulation, beginning at 11PM through 7AM the following morning. Cold temperatures and rain is also expected Tuesday night.

In anticipation of colder weather, the Department of Public Works has prepared all equipment and personnel to respond to the storm, and roadways will be pretreated ahead of the expected snowfall. Residents are encouraged to prepare for winter weather by following the guidance on the City of Providence’s Snow Ready website.

Additionally, PEMA has identified the following locations that will offer additional shelter capacity for people experiencing homelessness. These locations will be open 24/7 and accepting people beginning Monday night:

• Crossroads RI: 160 Broad Street, 401-521-2255
• Providence Rescue Mission: 627 Cranston Street, 401-274-8861
• Emmanuel House: 239 Public Street, 401-421-7888
• Cranston Street Armory, facilitated by Amos House: 310 Cranston Street, 401-272-0220
