The UMass Boston men’s soccer team will open its 2022 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament run versus Tufts University, it was announced by the national office Monday. SUNY Oneonta will host the four-team regional November 11-12, with start times to be determined.
The Beacons enter the NCAA tournament with an overall record of 10-5-4 after posting a 4-3 semifinal win over Eastern Connecticut State University and earning the league title with a 4-2 PK victory at top-seeded Western Connecticut State University following a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime. UMass Boston won the LEC title and its automatic berth in the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in program history.
Tufts received an at-large berth into the national tournament following a PK loss to Williams after the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw through overtime in their NESCAC quarterfinal match. The Jumbos are 7-2-7 overall this season, and are ranked No. 21 in the current (November 1) D3soccer.com Poll.
The winner of the UMass Boston-Tufts match will face the winner of the opening round contest between the Red Dragons (13-2-3) and New England College (9-7-3). Oneonta won the State University of New York Athletic Conference title with a 2-1 decision in PKs against SUNY Brockport while the Pilgrims won the New England Collegiate Conference title.
Despite a 20-0-2 record, WestConn did not receive one of the 20 available at-large berths. The Wolves won the LEC regular season title with an 8-0-0 league record, and entered the conference tournament ranked No. 16 in the D3soccer.com Poll and No. 21 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
