Brown’s newest students, by the numbers

With the start of the 2022-23 academic year on the horizon, Brown University is welcoming 3,203 new students to College Hill in the days leading up to Tuesday, Sept. 6 — when each will have the chance to celebrate Opening Convocation and process through the famed Van Wickle Gates to mark the beginning of their Brown experiences.

(Editor's note: Due to severe weather, Convocation has been postponed and will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10.)

Among these newest students are the 1,719 members of the undergraduate Class of 2026, as well as an accomplished cohort of undergraduate transfer students and doctoral, master’s and medical students. Here’s a look at the 3,203 newest students on College Hill, by the numbers.

New Undergraduates

A total of 50,649 students applied for admission to Brown’s undergraduate Class of 2026. The University admitted 2,562 students, yielding a matriculating class of 1,719. Ten new students are enrolling through Brown's Resumed Undergraduate Education program, which serves students who interrupted or delayed their formal education, and 104 new members of the Brown community are transfer students, making for a total of 1,833 incoming undergraduates, including 12 military veterans.

The Class of 2026: A Snapshot

  • 50% will receive need-based scholarship or grant aid.
  • 51% of class members are students of color.
  • 15% are first-generation college students.
  • Students in the class come to Brown from 81 nations and speak 100 languages.
  • 13% are international citizens.
  • Beyond the U.S., the countries most represented are China, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, Ukraine and South Korea.
  • Among the most common intended areas of concentration are economics, computer science, political science, biology and engineering.
New Graduate Students

  • Approximately 1,226 incoming graduate students will begin studies in 45 doctoral and 30 master’s and executive master’s programs.
  • 32% of new U.S. graduate students are from groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
  • 45% of new graduate students are international students.
  • Incoming students come from 50 U.S. states and territories and 58 nations.
  • Beyond the U.S., the countries most represented are China, India, South Korea and Canada.
New Medical Students

  • A total of 144 aspiring physicians began their medical education in August at the Warren Alpert Medical School.
  • 27% of students are from groups historically underrepresented in medicine.
  • Students come from 57 colleges and universities; 46 students are from Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education.
  • Members of the class come from 28 U.S. states and territories and 20 nations.
  • 16 students will start in Brown’s combined M.D.-Sc.M. program in Primary Care-Population Medicine, the first of its kind in the nation.
