Congressman Seth Magaziner, who represents Rhode Island’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, recently used his social media platform to highlight several cases involving alleged mistreatment of immigrants and U.S. citizens by immigration authorities.
On July 23, 2025, Magaziner shared an account from Sirine Shebaya, attorney and Executive Director of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild (NIPNLG), stating: “We heard from Sirine Shebaya, attorney and Executive Director of @NIPNLG. Sirine represents a four-year-old U.S. citizen child with cancer who was deported in April without the consent of their parents. Which Secretary Noem lied under oath about. Absolutely inhumane.”
In another post on the same day, Magaziner described the detention of a long-term resident by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): “Alejandro Barranco and his two brothers served our country as United States Marines. Their father, Narciso, is a landscaper who has lived & worked in the U.S. for years. Yet he was violently detained by ICE while on the job in June, despite having no criminal record.”
Magaziner also referenced testimony from Karla of Bronx Defenders regarding due process concerns: “Karla of @BronxDefenders shared how her clients who live and work in the U.S. are being swept up with no due process. One client with diabetes even had a medical episode after being denied insulin and proper food. This doesn’t make our country safer.”
Seth Magaziner has served as a member of Congress since 2023 after succeeding James Langevin as representative for Rhode Island’s 2nd district. Born in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1983, Magaziner is currently 39 years old and resides in Cranston. He is an alumnus of Brown University (BA, 2006) and Yale University (2010).
